A few years ago, with the popularization of the two circ method of sock knitting, the last barrier for those who wanted to knit socks but lived in fear of double pointed needles was removed. Then sock knitting was taken one step further with the introduction of the one long circ method. Add in self patterning yarn and sock knitting was on fire.

I cannot remember a time in my knitting life other than the late fifties craze for argyles that sock knitting has been of such great interest to so many knitters.

With so many options, I have been knitting socks with double points, two circs and one long circ. Often it would depend on what needle set was available to me when the 'I have to knit socks' hit me. There were times when I would have three or four pairs going at the same time, each using a different technique. During one of these phases, I realized that it would be terrific to have a heel that didn't interrupt the flow or require the movement of stitches in any of these techniques. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have a heel that worked cuff-to-toe, toe-to-cuff and wasn't needle dependent or complex.

After months of experimentation and months of 'just heels', I finally settled on a short row method that is so fraught with visual cues that once learned, doesn't mean I am 'married to the count'.

In the past, any interruptions during a heel turn often meant that I lost count and would need to rip back and start over again. Often I would lock myself away until I had the heel turned. Not so anymore. Sock knitting has become the ultimate knitting relaxation for me. I can always turn to a sock to calm me, since there are no longer any stress points in the knitting.
